>> new this morning, investigators are zeroing in on the five minutes scrambled before that massive container ship slammed into the francis scott key bridge in baltimore causing it to collapse lapse into the river. according to the ntsb, the first alarms went off at 01:24 a.m. the ship's crew dropped an anchor are called for tug boats, sent a mayday out, but things developed so quickly. they never really had a chance to stop it from taking down the bridge at 01:29 a.m. today, the search for the victims has been paused due to the sheer amount of debris in the water dive teams pulled out the bodies, however, of two construction workers, their bodies were found submerged in a truck surrounded by concrete. cnn's gabe cohen is live with us from baltimore gabe, what else have investigators discovered from the ship's black box that they were able to obtain well as

you. >> laid out there, sarah describes a really frantic few minutes as that as the ship experienced, that a total blackout, the pilot losing power, the ability to steer audible alarms going off on the ship as he called for those tug boats calling for his crew to steer left to trying to get any help he could eventually though, that mayday call went out, which helped police on land stop traffic to the bridge though. look, it's really hard to hear these details heartbreaking, knowing that those eight construction workers weren't reached throughout all this, six of whom are believed to have died in the river. and as you mentioned, serra, the recovery effort has stopped today because of the conditions that those rescue and recovery crews are dealing with out there on the potassium go river and take a listen. this is how the chief of state police described it yesterday >> because of the superstructure surrounding the vehicle, what we believe were the vehicles and the amount of

concrete and debris divers are no longer able to safely navigate or operate around that we have exhausted all search efforts >> and so sarah now, a lot of the focus turns to getting the bridge. all of that still out of the water and getting that ship moved. what is going to be a major problem or at least another roadblock here? is the hazardous material that's also been discovered, 56 containers of it, more than 700 tonnes and it's making it difficult because it means that crews, in large part can't get on the bow of the ship where the bridge came down because some of those containers have been breached there is a bit of a spill into the river, although the coast guard says it's not a public health concern at this point, but it's creating more problems for those crews that are still bringing an equipment and are trying to figure out how to move this massive bridge. you can see a lot of it
4:05 am
when we look at the pictures above the water, there's even more of it below the water, sarah, and any little bit any piece of concrete could be a hazard for ships coming in and out in the future. so they have to get it all out. >> and it's hampering the recovery efforts of those bodies still in the water, gabe cohen, thank you so much for that update. john >> all right. seen as maria santana has been talking to the families of the victims. she is in baltimore for us this morning, maria, what are you hearing? >> yeah. hi. how are you, john? well, it has been incredibly heart-breaking to speak to these families throughout every stage of this first, i'll be initial shock of what happened. and then those that were cleaning on to hope i'm hoping that a miracle would happen >> and of course, the realization that as the hours and days went by, that just seemed less and less a possible. >> what >> we know is that two bodies were recovered. authorities have identified one of them as dorlian castillo cabrera. he is a 26 year-old, are from

case in georgia and look today, we're going to hear oral arguments on several motions, including one filed by trump's lead attorney, steve sadow, where he is arguing that the indictment in georgia, the sprawling rico charge, the conspiracy case, violates his first amendment is protected speech under the first amendment, when to take a look at what cedaw wrote in his motion that he was filed to the court before today's hearing, it says the first amendment and affording the broadest protection to political speech and discussion regarding governmental affairs. not only braces, but in courage is exactly the kind of behavior under attack in this indictment. obviously, prosecutors in georgia disagree with that. they view this these criminal charges as a broad conspiracy. you look at the top charge in this indictment is the racketeering charge, which really is the big one here. it's really the one that trump's attorneys are going to try to knocked out, convince the judge again today. hey, violates the first amendment rights while fani willis is team will argue that trump oversaw a broad conspiracy to try to overturn the 2020 election. look funny. this comes as fani willis is really trying to re, focus people's
4:16 am
attention on the case itself, on the criminal charges against donald trump and his remaining co-defendants. we actually caught up with bonnie willis last weekend at an unrelated event. in atlanta. take a listen to what she said when asked about the state of the case in georgia >> that's not something that i might embarrassing in any way and i know that i have not done anything that's illegally. there are efforts to slow down its train, but the train is coming so one of those efforts and willis's opinion seems to also be coming from trump's allies in congress republican congressman jim jordan. did, did subpoena willis a few weeks ago. she responded to that subpoena yesterday in a letter that also hit back at jordan for trying to wage which she calls a political investigation against her. she wrote interlinear jordan, nothing that you do will derail the efforts of my staff and i bring the election interference, prosecution to trial. my family and my staff and i have been threatened repeatedly by people making violent, often racist attacks. neither of those threats nor anything your colleagues. and you say, or do
4:17 am
will deter us from fulfilling our duty to bring this case to trial? obviously today's hearing is the first moment where we will hear from fani willis is team and trump's attorneys sense that disqualification effort you mentioned largely failed if the appeals court could still take that up. but now willis really trying to move the case forward and mcafee has agreed to allow that to happen. >> okay. anzac were also learning that one of trump's co-defendants in georgia just got cleared to work for the 2024 trump campaign. what can you share about that? >> yeah, fred harrison, florida, as you mentioned, he's charged in georgia alongside donald trump as part of this rico case brought by fani willis. he actually only realized that the judge gave them permission a month ago to work for donald trump in trump's campaign in 2024, we're only realizing it this week. he posted the letter from mcafee on twitter it's interesting because the terms of his bond agreement fluid cannot have any direct contact with any of his fellow co-defendants, including trump, but the judge making an exception a little bit here

saying that you can have indirect contact with donald trump about the employment on the campaign. so sort of a bizarre scenario, one that we haven't really seen happen before, where two co-defendants, one of them and working on the other ones presidential campaign >> yeah. it is unusual. all right. is that cohen? thank you so much. john. >> all right. three presidents and a queen. if you count queen latifah, that is who will be at this unprecedented fundraiser in new york but and we just learned how much money it will bring in. also, we're getting new reporting in after multiple deaths in a stabbing spree right now. we don't have a clear motive in regards to what causes individual to commit such heinous crime this year. >> the one thing republicans and democrats have in common, they're both waiting for their nominees to die this such white trash in congress who are young

4:24 am
after months and months of israel's bombardment of gaza in the north many of them have moved south. and so the question that the us has had for these realizes how are you going to launch this ground invasion into rafah and still protect the millions of civilians who are they're taking rest fusion. so that is one of the main point of discussion that is going to come up during this meeting between us officials and israeli officials, which is expected to happen as soon as next week, israeli official said that they're still working to figure out the best date for that. but there's also comes after israeli defense minister yoav go on, he spent a few days here in dc meeting with white house and pentagon officials talking about this very thing talking about the israeli plan for what they're going to do to eliminate the remaining hamas battalions inside rafah's something israel says that it hasn't imperative to do, but that the us is urging them to think twice about saying that they need to find some kind of alternative option because any kind of offensive there is really going to exacerbate the already horrific humanitarian situation there. and so gelato, he
4:25 am
agreed, according to officials, to take back the us recommendations to israeli officials, discuss them. he says that he has an open mind about them, but still the us remains concerned here that if there is no ceasefire in conjunction with of course the release of hostages, that hamas is still holding inside gaza, then it could be potentially weeks before israel decides to move forward with this invasion. and so right now, the question is how much influence, how much leverage is the us going to have over israel during these conversations? and of course, keeping an eye on that second track here. very important, which is the release of the hostages hamas justice yesterday rejected the latest us is really proposal for the release of those hostages. they're continuing to go back and forth here, but the talks right now are stuck. even if they are not completely over. sara all right. natasha bertrand. thank you so much for your reporting, john. >> right. dolly parton suggests the perfect song to listen to while you wait for beyond seas album to release, why she is digging out the class

4:32 am
in new york tonight has already raised 25 million. the event will feature former president barack obama and bill clinton in a huge list of others. cnn's arlette sciences at the white house or the biden campaign as bill pulling this as the most successful pitot political fundraiser in us history >> yeah, john, and it really marks a unique moment in presidential politics as you have three democratic presidents teaming up with one goal in mind. and that is defeating former president donald trump tonight. they will be assembling more than 5,000 supporters at radio city music hall for this first of its kind, fundraiser featuring joe biden, bill clinton, and barack obama, stephen colbert will be moderating a discussion there and there's also a separate events that will be taking place online for those small dollar donors tickets for this event starting at a $225 when all the way up to $500,000 with the more you pay, the more
4:33 am
access you're getting, including one batch of supporters who will have a photo taken by famed photographer annie leibovitz of themselves and the three president. now, it comes as the biden campaign is touting this whopping 25 million billion-dollar figure that they're raising from this one night event if you just take a look at how that compares to some of the fundraising of the president in the past but back in february, he raised $53 billion total. and that has given him about 71 million cash on hand. now if you add in democratic accounts that number for his nearly double, compare that to former president donald trump, who currently has 33.5 million cash on hand. so this fundraiser will help add to that cash advantage. biden has as he ramps up his operations to take on trump in november. but this really marks quite a moment when it comes to having former president's involved in the president in president biden's a campaign, we have seen former president barack obama really a pick up his
4:34 am
involvement in the campaign. you know, he's taped these fundraisers, taped videos relating to health care, but in speaking with biden's advisers and obama's advisors in recent months, they've really made clear that they want to use the former president at moments that would be of maximum impact fund is one area where they have seen that obama has helped the operations. it's likely he won't be hitting the campaign trail until much later. in the fall as this election nears, but it does come as obama has, has said to allies, that he does believe this will be an incredibly close election and building leaves it will be an all moment. of course, they're also deploying a former president bill clinton or rarity out on the campaign trail. and it's really speaking to the fact that the biden campaign is trying to tap into this democratic star power using obama, using clinton to help boost biden's campaign heading into november well, let signs at the white house that event here in new york city tonight. thank you very much. there. all right. joining us now, a cnn political

commentator and former trump white house communications director, alyssa farah griffin. thank you so much for being here. we're just listening to arlette talk about this star studded event. we've got three former democrat or two former democratic? the president and joe biden all in one room with a bunch of stars showing up. and then in the same, at the same time here in new york, donald trump is here. he's been invited by the family of that new york police officer who was killed during a traffic stop all the while, there is a case going on in georgia involving trump and the 2020 election. when you look at all the things that are happening how is this being used? because it always is a how are the optics of this being used in spun? >> well, just fascinating split screens happening. so on the one hand, smart of joe biden, he's got a two-to-one cash advantage over donald trump on. i also think this is deliberate but to be appearing with two former presidents because no living republican presidential candidates other than sarah palin are backing donald trump.
4:36 am
i think that there's some optics are trying to lean into their however, donald trump, the master spinner is going to say, you, elites in new york with celebrities are raising these high-dollar donor money. will i? i'm in new york two honore a fallen new york police department officer, who was killed by somebody who'd been arrested on 2021 times previously, shoe the average american, the trump curious voter. this is what they want to see from him and it's also a distraction from his pending case in fulton county today i have to say donald trump is getting smarter. this is his third time running now, he knows what he's doing in a way that there's a sophistication that wasn't there. and i do think this works, but the money thing is very real. donald trump is raising money at the slowest clip he ever has the rnc is doing a bombed italy. they've got 11 million cash on hand compared to 77 in this time in 2020. so there's still major disadvantages that trump has. >> i think back in february, he raised about 20 million in this. we just heard john berman thing 25 million has already been raised right? in one night
4:37 am
for joe biden. i want to talk to you about the campaigning that we're seeing donald trump doing april 15, now scheduled to be his first criminal trial here in new york, which would mean because of the law hear the defendant has to be in the courtroom for this, which means he can't be on the campaign trail, but there are cameras that are going to be there every single day as this trial gets underway. how does he use it? how does it hurt him not being out on the campaign trail or is he able to just basically go out to the cameras and use them? >> i do think in objective-c hurts him to not be in kinga key swing states. but i do think he knows how to use the media to get his message out. he is going to have every camera, every network tuned in to see what remarks he says when he leaves. if he can have a discipline message, he's going to say his nonsense, witch hunt, stuff at the top. >> but >> if he can lean into a bit of a campaign message at each of these these court hearings, there's something there, but again, the money issue is very real. he had to cancel a rally in arizona, a very a key important battleground state to be able to focus resources on ohio. so for him to do these huge rallies that he's known
4:38 am

us government is going to have a policy across the government designed to prevent ai from being abused by us agencies. and so what are some of the things that it does? well, it requires federal agencies by december 1 implement things like steps too verify that they these ai tools don't endanger americans rights they'll also have to publish a complete list of the tools that they use that are powered by ai as well as why they're using these tools will also have to complete risk assessments to ensure that the public is aware of the potential risks that these these ai tools could pose. and then finally, these ai, these agencies will have to appoint a chief ai officer to oversee the use of some of these tools. now this is kind of been years in the making we've already seen hundreds of ai use cases in the federal government. we've seen agencies like nasa using artificial intelligence to
4:48 am
track wild volcano activity all around the world. agencies like noaa use ai to track wildfires and to count seals and whales. and this is really all just the beginning of what's going to be a much larger engagement with ai pretty good because agencies like the department of homeland security just recently announced last week, it's going to be using artificial intelligence to train immigration officers. it's going to use it to enhance law enforcement investigations. so this is really the tip of the iceberg and the federal government is trying to get out ahead of it. before anything goes awry. because until now, we've not had a single policy and agencies have been basically doing going doing basically their own thing. and now we're going to have some single standard guidelines here. frederick gosh. all right. very good. brian fung. thanks so much for bringing that to us. john >> this morning, baseball is back after a long winter

4:50 am
you got 13 games on tap today everyone was supposed to be an action. but unfortunately, as you mentioned a moment ago, john, due to rain, the metal it's brewers and braves, phillies, they were postponed until tomorrow and other first game today is going to be in baltimore as the orioles host the angels. and that certainly going to be an emotional pre-game ceremony as the team holds a moment of silence for the victims of the bridge collapse, camden yards, only about ten miles away from that francis scott key bridge are some hi pictures there. it camden yards. so john sports always has a way of bringing people together, but i'm sure it's gonna be emotional there for those oils >> emotional i think there's pitch, yes, special though i imagine for the people of baltimore and he shifting gears quickly, she's still playing in the tournament, but caitlin clark getting an officer offer, i should say, maybe she can't refuse here yeah. they do say some offers are too good to refuse and this might be one of them, john because we know caitlin clark likely going to be the first overall pick in the wnba draft next month, going to the indiana fever but
4:51 am
ice cube of the big three confirming to cnn that he has made a lucrative offer to caitlin clark to play in his league some are now you might be asking how caitlin clark do that because wnba and a bag three, they kinda go on at the same time during the summer, there'd be a few conflicts. but this certainly would be fun, john, and the offer, according to tmz, was for 5 million bucks and there's only ten games to play. so like we said, not sure you can turn that one down. we'll have to wait and see, but we could see caitlin clark playing in multiple leaks come this summer. >> look, i think >> most fans would say the more, the better >> we'll see how it all works out and you shells great to see you as you said, good luck to the red sox no one is happier that baseball season has started. then our john berman, i can say that with absolute clarity, but this may be the only day that i'm happy let's be clear, as a fan, right? yes. true. >> all right. >> this morning, the man ones dubbed the king of crypto, sam

bankman-fried will be back in federal court for sentencing. that could land him in prison for the next half-century the ftx founder was found guilty of committing one of the largest white-collar crimes in history, stealing more than 10 billion from his crypto customers. accounts cnn's kara scannell is here with the very latest on the story. what can we expect to hear in court today >> yes, there i mean, a big day for sam bankman-fried. he's 32 years old and he's facing a possible sentence of decades in prison federal prosecutors are asking for a sentence of 40 to 50 years in prison. as you said, because he was convicted of stealing more than 10 billion from investors from customers of ftx, as well as from lenders from its sister hedge fund alameda research in prosecutors also say that he spent $150 million to bribe chinese officials and made more than 100 million in a legal political donations to politicians and campaigns. no prosecutors are saying that in their filing to the judge, his
4:53 am
life in recent years has been one of unmatched greed and hubris of ambition and rationalization and courting risk and gambling repeatedly with other people's money. they've also said that his lack of contrition has been galling. now, his team is pleading with the judge saying that he should get no more than 6.5 years in prison, saying that he is not like other fraudsters like bernie madoff who stole money from pensions that he was not intending to enrich himself by this pointing to his his look of often wearing t-shirts and shorts they have said to the judge that the sentence that either the prosecutor there's want or the probation department, which is asked for a year sentence, they call that a medieval view of punishment to reach what amounts to a death in prison sentencing recommendation crushing sam in this way is unnecessary. they've also sent to the court dozens of letters from friends and supporters that bankman-fried, but prosecutors have also provided the judge with it looks like hundreds of pages of letters from victims in this case. and
4:54 am
we may even hear from one of them today who will speak before the court. sarah, there is a huge difference between what the prosecutors and the defense time-wise are asking for in prison, we will see what the judge does. kara scannell. thank you so much. john. >> all right. we got some new video just in to cnn. this is from a traffic camera on the francis scott key bridge. it's the first time i'm seeing it as well. it shows the moments just before the ship crashed into the bridge causing the bridge to collapse in the distance. what you can see there is a flashing light that is believed to be of the construction crew. then there it is on the right side of the screen. you can see the boat slowly beginning to approach the bridge, ultimately, as the boat makes contact with the bridge, the video is just completely lost. the video goes out, but you can see an empty bridge here at this point because police were able to clear it and stop whoa, stop drivers on each side but you do see the lights of what is believed to be that construction crew with this now
4:55 am
democratic senator from maryland, chris van hollen, senator van hollen, thanks so much. as i said, that was just the first time i got a chance to see that video. you can see almost eerily that ship moving so slowly, moving at ten knots isn't that slowly toward the bridge and the flashing lights? of that construction crew, sad to see that >> john, it is sad. it's been a tragic byman, baltimore and our focus has been really putting our arms around the family and loved ones of the six construction workers who died after the ship hi hit the bridge and they fell into the water that has been our priority. as we then look forward to rebuilding >> so putting her arms around the families of those six people. i think you feel you need to start putting your arms around the families of the sum 8,000 workers who work at the port right now directly working on that port, on those docs loading and unloading the
4:56 am
vessels there >> what's going to >> happen to them as this port is all but close right now. >> well, you put your finger on our priority now that recovery efforts are wrapping up and that is the fact that the port of baltimore is one of the busiest ports in america. the biggest port for cars onloading an offloading. and as you say thousands and thousands of workers directly employed there and then tens of thousands, four whose livelihood depends on it. so opening the channel is the priority. why are we so? >> honored? pleased that the present united states followed through on his promises the army corps of engineer will be is on its way right now to clear that channel and we got to make sure that we do that so that ships can once again start in that report, there were as i understand than a course, ships in the port that stock during 20 waiting to get in so the
4:57 am
reality is that for all those jobs and for all the commerce of it goes through the port of baltimore. i opening that channel is the priority. >> i do understand that there's some kind of direct aid to the ship workers in dock workers being proposed are being discussed in the maryland state legislature. is that something that you are supportive of any is it something that you would like to see me at the federal level to some kind of of direct aid payment plan until they can get back to full-time employment yes. >> i support the efforts in the maryland general assembly and we're looking at whether or not we have to supplement that effort at the federal level. the most important thing though john is of course, to clear that channel just as fast as possible and the federal government will be picking up the bill for that whatever it costs. and it has to happen just as soon as possible. it may be john that we open up one of the passageways that that
4:58 am
area is designed so you have to weigh ship traffic. but obviously if we can open one of the lanes sooner, than that, obviously would allow ships to come in and out >> what's the earliest estimate you've heard as to when that could happen? >> nobody wants to put an exact estimate on it, but i like i everybody recognizes that given everything we just talked about, given the jobs at stake, given the small businesses that will lose money and others, we've got to make this a priority and so that is the real laser focus. right now. i don't want to guess, but you know, i mean, i it's not going to take a long, long time, but i hope that it will be done in a matter of weeks. that's my hope. >> let's hope i mean, these are miracle workers, the army corps of engineers and the people working there. hopefully
4:59 am
they can get this done quickly >> center >> what do you want to see or what needs to happen in terms of bridge safety around the country? what questions does this raise for you as it does not appear that this bridge had the so-called fenders around the base and other instances might we have might have kept this type of catastrophe from happening >> we'll look the national transportation safety board is conducting its investigation of everything that happened i spoke to the chair of the ntsb the de of this accident. >> so we are going to win hey, there their findings. their findings will i think help with two things. number one, find out exactly what caused this and i should say that if there's liability on behalf of the ship owners, they're going to certainly have to contribute to the costs of rebuilding this bridge. but the other purpose is to make sure that we learned lessons they try to avoid this going forward. >> i can't >> comment at all, john, on the
5:00 am
structure of the bridge. i mean, this was a ship that is three. what ball fields wong even going ten knots, that's a lot of momentum so i don't know if i'd want to guess at anyway, about structural issues, but bridge itself was till all a cat by all accounts, very structurally sound. people are talking about different things that might be done in the future tug boats, you know, you have plugged boats in the inner harbor that helped around he shifts boats were not accompanying the ship as it passed under this other bridge. but again, these are all possibilities. we just need to wait for the ntsb and of course we're also going to be watching our effort to rebuild the bridge itself that varies yeah, about 35,000 people every day >> center of chris van hollen from maryland, the whole country's with you this morning, senator, know that. thanks so much for being with us a new our of cnn news
